Bare Essentials by Dennis de Groot
A collection of 50 illustrations of world famous pop culture icons reduced to their barest
shapes and colors. By reducing some of the world’s most well known characters to
simple shapes and colors, Dennis tries to explore the line between recognition and detail.
Bare Essentials features 50 illustrations of cartoon, movie, video game and comic book
characters in their ‘barest essentials’.
Inspired by work of the likes of Saul Bass, Ben Bos and Keith Haring, graphic designer
Dennis de Groot started a study on the usage of geometric shapes in illustrations.
By reducing things to their necessary shapes and colors he soon found his own
unique signature in his work. As a personal practice Dennis began illustrating
pop culture characters, who had formed his own palette of inspiration throughout the years. After blogging the illustrations, they quickly gathered interest from around the world and inspired him to start a full series. By reducing some of the world’s most well known characters to simple shapes and colors, Dennis tries to explore the line between recognition and detail. Bare Essentials features 50 illustrations of cartoon, movie, video game and comic book characters in their ‘barest essentials’.
