Biography
290 square meters may at first look like a shop but it’s actually a lot more than that.
It was founded as 90 square meters by Ido in 2001. Ido wanted to create a space that attracted creative, talented and like-minded people. The basis was a place that would inspire him and where different events could be held like fashion shows, product launches, poetry readings or art shows.
The location was on an ultra-modern housing development on KNSM Island in Amsterdam. This is not a place you just happen to stumble across.
It was a destination store, a place of discovery where you can find a unique selection that reflect Ido’s passion for shoes, clothes, bags, books, music, magazines and art.
The first art show was the Amsterdam based street-art collective: The London Police and since then 35 more shows have taken place with artists ranging from Miss Van (France) to Kami & Sasu (Japan) to the photographic duo UZI Part B (UK) and the personal work of the Wieden & Kennedy creative team.
In addition to selling products and launching art shows more unique projects have found their way to 90 square meters. A few years ago, Nike launched their world premier shoe project Nike id at 90 square meters. We were the first shop in the world where consumers could create their own custom Nikes.
The community that has been created around the 90 square meters space has helped develop the business and projects we now work on with global brands. The power of a virtual network and community building has truly been our business philosophy. Nike, O2, Levi’s, Heineken, Oilily, Red Bull and Bacardi are a few of the clients we have worked for.
April 2008 90 square meters moved to a new location near the flea market Waterlooplein, right in the city centre, and the shop grew into 290 square meters. It is now situated underground in an old bank vault and still a place of discovery. The new shop still carries a lot of brands that have been available on the KNSM Island for years like Wood Wood, Levi’s, Nike, Henrik Vibskov,, Holland Esquire, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair and S.N.S. to name a few but also superb brands like: A.P.C., Our Legacy, Rodebjer, Pendleton, Minimarket, Eley Kishimoto, Porter and Surface To Air.
Next to the expansion in the fashion area we also introduced cosmetic brands like Håkansson and Dr. Harris and home fragrances by Geodesis.
One of the reasons for moving was the lack of space on the KNSM Island. In the new shop Ido’s passion for bikes resulted in a range of custom made bikes and the room to launch products such as Dockers K1, Nike Sportswear and Sony’s PSP GO.
The shop is where everything comes together.
The people, the projects, the ideas and the inspiration.
